Peru

The project is based in Kimbiri, a town in the Cusco region of Peru, within the VRAEM (Valley of the Rivers Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro), situated at an altitude of 1800m. The goal is to develop sustainable packaging for chocolate using cacao husks and other agricultural waste products to replace traditional plastic bilaminate packaging. Spanish is the primary language spoken in the area, with some locals also speaking Quechua. The dry season, particularly in July and August, brings temperate weather with daytime temperatures around 15°C and nighttime lows around 0°C, making it suitable for outdoor activities and fieldwork. However, the region’s high humidity needs to be considered when designing the packaging.


Due to the area's history of narcotrafficking and illegal activities, securing equipment and materials is recommended. Health risks such as malaria, dengue, and yellow fever are present due to the warm and humid climate, so precautions like vaccinations, mosquito repellents, and protective clothing are essential. The packaging must have a shelf-life of at least one year, adhere to food safety regulations, and be optimized for durability with strong diffusion barriers. Additionally, the production process should be executable within Peru, able to meet the demands of the chocolate manufacturer, and sustainable, with locals trained to continue production after the project ends.
