Sikiliza Leo Uganda

2025

Uganda

The project aims to develop sanitation facilities in the Mulanda area of the Tororo district in eastern Uganda, with further discussions needed to align with local needs. Key questions include the number of toilet blocks and toilets per block, the type of toilet (possibly elevated for easy waste removal), and additional sanitary facilities like showers and sinks. Considerations involve whether to use dry toilets or those with water, the availability of water, and potential rainwater recovery from roofs. Options for managing human waste include biogas production, composting, and using nutrients for agriculture.

Secondary goals include promoting hygiene through educational materials, exploring local disinfectant production, and teaching the community about human waste management. The project may also incorporate solar energy for electricity, enabling phone charging in sanitation blocks and lighting in toilets.

The climate in the region is characterized by a tropical monsoon climate, with an annual rainfall of 1,200 to 1,500 mm and two rainy seasons. Temperatures during the dry winter months average 21 to 22°C with high humidity. English is the official language, with Japhadola and Swahili spoken locally. Tororo is generally considered safe, with a low crime rate compared to urban centers, though caution is advised. The community is friendly and welcoming, contributing to a safer environment.
