Agro-Ecology in Action: Transforming Food Systems

Aula Zeger van Hee, Leuven

23 mrt 2025

What:
📷📷 In a world facing climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing food insecurity, the way we produce food has never been more important. Agro-ecology offers a powerful alternative – one that restores ecosystems, strengthens local food systems, and empowers farmers. By working with nature rather than against it, agro-ecology regenerates soils, conserves water, and increases resilience to climate shocks, all while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for communities.

📷 During this event, we will be joined by Souleymane Yougbare, technical director of CNABio, an association uniting 100 agro-ecological actors in Burkina Faso. They focus on developing ecological villages, where soils are restored, trees are planted, and agro-ecological vegetable gardens are started in schools.

📷 We will also hear from Emmanuel Yap, Food and Land Policy Officer at CIDSE, a speaker with extensive hands-on experience in supporting farmers across the Philippines and Asia in their transition to agro-ecology.

📷 Additionally, Dany Bylemans, General director of PCFruit and professor at KU Leuven, will share his expertise in sustainable agriculture and plant protection. With experience in fruit growing and innovative crop management techniques, he specializes in integrated pest management, sustainable farming practices, and technological advancements in fruit cultivation. His work bridges scientific research and practical applications, supporting farmers in adopting more efficient and eco-friendly agricultural methods.

📷📷Their insights from successful, on-the-ground programs will be complemented by perspectives from our university expert, providing both practical and academic viewpoints on the challenges and opportunities in agro-ecological transformation.
